Choosing the right motor insurance policy is one of the most important financial decisions a vehicle owner in Zambia makes. Get it wrong and you could find yourself covering a huge bill after an accident you assumed was included. Get it right and you drive with confidence knowing you're genuinely protected.
The Four Levels of Motor Cover
In Zambia, motor insurance is generally available at four levels for private vehicles:
- RTA Only (Road Traffic Act minimum) - covers your legal liability to third parties only; required by law for all vehicles on public roads
- Third Party Only - similar to RTA but with broader liability wording; does not cover damage to your own vehicle
- Third Party, Fire & Theft - adds cover for your vehicle if stolen or damaged by fire, on top of third-party liability
- Comprehensive - the most complete cover; includes all of the above plus damage to your own vehicle regardless of fault
What Does 'Comprehensive' Actually Include?
A comprehensive policy for a private vehicle in Zambia typically covers:
- Accidental damage to your vehicle (collision, impact, overturning)
- Theft of the entire vehicle
- Fire damage
- Third-party bodily injury and property damage
- Medical expenses for the driver (up to policy limits)
- Windscreen replacement (usually an optional add-on)
- Loss of use / car hire (often an optional add-on)
No-Claim Discount (NCD)
If you drive without making a claim, you earn a no-claim discount (NCD) that reduces your renewal premium. In Zambia, NCDs typically run from 15% after one claim-free year up to 65% after five or more consecutive claim-free years.
It's worth protecting your NCD. After a minor incident, calculate whether it's worth claiming - if the repair cost is only slightly above your excess, paying out of pocket and preserving your NCD may be cheaper over the following years.
Commercial and Fleet Vehicles
If you operate a fleet, goods-carrying vehicles, or passenger transport, standard private motor policies won't apply. Commercial vehicle policies are rated differently and need to account for usage, loading, driver pool, and route. An incorrect classification at inception can result in a claim being declined.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles have their own class of policy in Zambia, separate from private cars. If you ride a motorbike - whether for commuting or delivery - make sure your policy specifically covers motorcycles and doesn't rely on a private car policy that excludes two-wheelers.
What to Do After an Accident
- Do not move the vehicles until police have attended (required for all incidents on public roads)
- Collect the third party's registration number, name, and contact details
- Photograph the scene and any damage before vehicles are moved
- Report the incident to your insurer within 24 hours - many policies require this
- Do not admit liability at the scene; let the insurers handle it
